We all know we should be drinking endless water to plump our skin, but dermatologist Dr Howard Murad, author of new book The Water Secret: The Cellular Breakthrough To Look And Feel 10 Years Younger, believes it’s the water you ‘eat’ that has the biggest impact.
‘Skin cells hold onto water for longer when it’s taken in through food,’ he says. ‘Conversely, it tends to flush straight out of your body if you drink it.’ He recommends a diet high in water-dense foods, such as fruits and veg, combined with those rich in fibre and lecithin, substances that help your cells hold onto water. Here are Dr Murad’s best skin-hydrating eats:
Breakfast: Apples are 84.6% water. Eat slices with oats and linseeds, which strengthen skin cells.
Snack: With a whopping 97% water content, eating watermelon is like moisturising from the inside out.
Lunch: An egg salad will work wonders for your complexion. Lettuce and cucumber are mainly water, and eggs contain lecithin to make cells watertight.
Dinner: Feast on salmon; it’s 75% water and is packed with strengthening fatty acids. Eat it alongside highly hydrating cabbage and onions.
